PolicyLab publishes three legislative proposals on current public policy issues

PolicyLab has published three legislative proposals in response to recent public debate and emerging policy issues in Cyprus. Developed as practical, evidence-based legislative solutions, the proposals aim to contribute to informed policymaking and support constructive public discussion.

The proposals focus on three key areas:

• Constitutional reform of presidential pardons by abolishing the President's constitutional power to suspend, remit or commute criminal sentences, with the aim of reinforcing the separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary.

  
  

• Strengthening protection against abusive lawsuits (SLAPPs) by extending the safeguards provided under Cyprus' new anti-SLAPP legislation to purely domestic cases, ensuring equal protection for journalists, civil society organisations, activists and citizens engaged in matters of public interest.

  
  

• Introducing a legal framework for unclaimed bodies by assigning responsibility for their burial to the competent local authority, establishing clear procedures and timeframes, and safeguarding human dignity and public health.
