Why this topic? Why now?

When Cyprus’s Minister of Education, Dr. Athena Michailidou, recently called for “the reintegration of civic education” and the strengthening of “the education of active and democratic citizens,” her words resonated with hope. For many Cypriots, it sounded like a long-overdue promise to bring civic learning back into the classroom and, more importantly, into society itself. But what does this vision truly entail? And where should Cyprus look for the lessons that can turn this pledge into meaningful change?

Moreover, Antonis Ellinas, President of the Association of Political Science Graduates, called for the immediate reinstatement of Civic Education as a standalone subject (abolished in 2015) in the next school year. “We understand there are challenges, but with the voting age lowered to 17, growing democratic challenges, and studies showing signs of democratic erosion, it is crucial to revisit the need for this subject” he said.
